Mainland cherry growers desperate to break into the new market were ready to cut into the $11.7 billion U.S. cherry harvest to be made in 2013, a major jump from $7.6 billion in 2012, when U.S. growers fell short of projections after decades of cherry harvest shortages.
Cherry harvest demand in all fruit-producing states including California is at the lowest level since 2002, according to the USDA's 2013 Cherry Research Report.
Cherry production in the United States has been flat or declining since the 1990s, according to USDA data. In 2012, the U.S. produced 11 billion pounds of apples, more than half of the fruit, but fell short of expectations by just over 5 billion pounds.
Cherry farmers in Southern California, particularly in the central California wine growing counties of Ventura, Santa Barbara and San Bernardino, have been facing drought-related challenges.
To reach their goals, they are moving forward with a plan to raise fruit, water and soil in a climate that will meet a new research report called California Caring: A Long-Term Strategy of Research and Innovation from a Farm Research Institute, or CSRI.
"I think we're going to go really, really far in California, and in some areas we will fail," said Paul Sizemore, head of Sizemore Consulting Group, a California cherry growing operation with 5,000 employees.
Sizemore said most U.S. cherry production now comes from the central California grape-producing region where production of California white raspberries has been relatively strong over the past few decades. California raspberries have proven to be particularly reliable due to their high acidity, said Richard F. Nesbitt, research professor at the CSRI in West Oakland, California.
He said the drought and other weather conditions that have hit Southern California are also affecting the rest of the state. The U.S. and California grape fruit production is a little over 10 percent, according to Sizemore, but is expected to exceed 20 percent by 2015.
The CSRI's research on the California Caring study included working with a wide variety of growers in the region, from farmers in the central California wine region to farmers in Santa Barbara and the wine region in Sonoma County.
Bev Mazzuca, owner of a California wine growing operation, wants the future of the region to be California's "mango island" or "lone island" in drought and snow events.
She said the region needs more help from the federal government.

Pakistan's Army Chief General Qari Asif has called the Kabul attack a "brutal attack" by militants and warned "we will not accept it."
The attack in Ghazni province, some 500 kilometres (310 miles) southwest of the Afghan capital, comes on the eve of U.S.-led troops withdrawing from Afghanistan within the following seven months and more than two years of war.
An Afghan security spokesman in Kabul told CNN that the attacker was still holding up his vehicle, suggesting the attack was carried out by a different person.
A video clip posted on Twitter showed the attacker driving a rented vehicle and the attacker brandishing an assault rifle and wearing a mask at the same time, with at least one of them firing a shot.
"We had reports that his group killed 20 people including 12 children in a suicide attack near the border this morning," an Afghan security official told CNN. "An explosive device was found nearby. We have no information on who he is or what his intention was."
The security official was not named.
Pakistan is still the world's biggest producer of arms.
Two U.S. aircraft were dispatched from Afghanistan to search the area around the attack, the White House said on Twitter, adding it was conducting a review.
The U.S. Embassy in Islamabad issued a statement saying: "U.S. Embassy Kabul is aware of reports suggesting that a suicide bomber was responsible for Saturday's attack in Ghazni Province. U.S. consular officials are currently assisting with efforts to assess the situation in Ghazni and determine the extent of any loss of life."
